This is a Bonito....
Caught on January 31 as we headed in to Black Point Harbor, this is a Little Tunny. Also known as a Florida Bonito or as a False Albacore. Note the rich blue color and wavy patterns on the upper side. Compare those upper side markings with the underside stripes of the Skipjack Tuna.
This fish was originally mis-identified as an Atlantic Bonito. A close review of the pictures and consultation with Dunaway's "Sport Fish of the Atlantic" resulted in a proper identification. The Atlantic or Common Bonito has wavy lines rather than a wavy pattern. Additionally, unlike the Florida Bonito, its two dorsal fins are not divided. On this basis, we are certain that our catch (and dinner - grilled kabobs marinated in olive oil, lemon and oregano) is a Little Tunny (a/k/a Florida Bonito). Quite good, thank you very much.
